What is SOS?

“Serving Our Soldiers” was created in June 2007 to fulfill a need within our church and we have begun to outreach into the community as well. As we talked with people in our church, the number of veterans we have at DFUMC is staggering. We realized that our church had no group to support our military families. With their encouragement, we took on this mission, and still feel called to do so.

Mission Goals
Send one care package monthly to soldiers stationed overseas in war areas
Send one letter weekly to soldiers
Send one letter monthly to spouse/significant other or parents of soldier
Provide support here at home to soldier’s family (i.e. emotional, spiritual, do small fix it jobs around house, mow, try to fulfill any request by outsourcing if necessary)
Monthly prayer gathering for all military families or monthly get-together for support
Recognize Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day (i.e. flowers, inserts for bulletins/newsletter, cards to veterans, decorations around church, special music)
Have a support team and phone tree available for our military and their families
Expand to fulfill other requested needs of our retired military and their families
Place drop boxes in church and FLC for care package items requested and for letters

Care package items will be based on each soldier’s needs/wants for themselves (this will depend some on where they are based) and other standard items included in each package
Soldier Bible, Devotional and the Soldier’s Prayer (Psalm 91)
Food items, candy
Toiletries
Reading/Writing materials, cards
Theme for each month for holidays, etc
Fun down-time items
